According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 109,576 and is estimated to reach 119,250 by the year 2010. It embodies a land area of 94.9 square kilometers. Majority of Carrollton students are from the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District. Others from the south go to the Dallas Independent School District and the Lewisville Independent School District hosts student from the north of Carrollton. It was believed by most local historians that the city got its name from the early settlers of the city who came from Carrollton, Illinois although other stories of its origin are told.
